Prepare for a mechanical automotive engineering career with this starter course focused on introductory trade skills. Gain NCEA Level 2 alongside the theory and practical skills that will enable you to work in entry-level jobs in automotive workshops.

Course Content
  • Good work habits and safe work practices in the automotive industry
  • Knowledge of automotive lubricants
  • Terminology used in the motor industry
  • Remove and refit road wheels on a vehicle
  • Remove and replace a lamp on a motor vehicle
  • Prepare a vehicle or machine for use, and shutdown after use
  • Knowledge of vehicle documentation and primary systems of a vehicle
  • Motor industry engineering tasks
  • Tools and equipment used in the motor industry
  • Disassembling and reassembling a four-stroke multi-cylinder engine
  • Interchanging and balancing wheels
  • Knowledge of new and emerging technology in the motor industry
  • Basic tuning on a four-stroke petrol engine
  • Perform general servicing checks on a motor vehicle
  • Select and use hand tools and workshop equipment

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • Domestic learners  
  • Students must be between 16 and 24 years of age  
  • Students should not have attained NCEA Level 2 previously
  • No mandatory academic prerequisites for this programme

English Language Requirements

Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme of study which is taught in English. Students intending to enrol for training are assessed on their language, literacy, and numeracy abilities to determine their capability to successfully undertake the training and determine whether any additional support is needed.
