The aim of this qualification is to equip learners with essential life skills and foundational knowledge related to early learning. Graduates will be prepared to nurture and support the development of children in parenting and caregiving roles or proceeding to further study.  It will also aid kaiawhina and caregivers in a closely monitored setting, specifically related to the care of mokopuna, which includes infants, toddlers, and young children. Graduates may contribute to improved community and whanau/family outcomes by providing support for mokopuna – infants, toddlers, and young children.

Course Content

• Holistic Wellbeing, brain development and lifelong learning in young children

• Wellbeing and health of mother and kukene/foetus during pregnancy.

• Care practices for holistic wellbeing of young mokopuna/children

• Environmental factors affecting health and wellbeing of young mokopuna.

• Play experiences and environments contributing to mokopuna/childs’s development and learning.

• Healthy eating, food and nutritional requirements of young mokopuna.

• Whakapapa/beliefs and practice of care

• Communication in Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings

• Te reo and Tikanga Māori in Early Learning and Care

• Community Support Services in Early Childhood Education

Entry Requirements

• Students must be 17 years of age or over.

• Prior to enrolment, students must be police vetted to meet the safety check requirements under Children’s Act 2014.  

• Academic requirements: applicant must have a minimum school achievement of NCEA Level 2 or equivalent.

• Students must have an appropriate level of literacy and numeracy skills to study at level 2.

• All applicants will be interviewed to consider the application for enrolment. Acceptance will be determined at the discretion of the interviewer.

• There may be further restrictions when this course is offered under a Tertiary Education Commission Contract.

Pathways

This qualification provides a pathway to higher-level learning and education, either in early childhood education (ECE) or elsewhere.  This qualification may lead to the following: • New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Introductory Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 2849] • New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4) [Ref: 2850] • New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) [Ref: 2851] Graduates who have appropriate te reo Māori skills may undertake further study towards Te Mana o te Mokopuna (Kaupae 3) [Ref: 2854] - the New Zealand Certificate in a Maori World View of Early Learning (Level 3)  Employment Pathways Graduates of this qualification will have the basic skills and foundation knowledge to care for children/mokopuna, primarily in parenting roles. Graduates may also be involved as a kaiāwhina, providing support for carers in a supervised environment, or in unpaid caregiver support roles.
