The programme is for those learners intending to gain an introduction to basic skills relevant to the building, construction, and allied trades sector. It provides foundation knowledge and skills relevant to a wide range of trade occupations within the building and construction industry.

Course Content
  • Module 1 – Planning a BCATS project – This module introduces learners to health and safety legislation and procedures, various roles of allied trades, timber and other construction material, power tools and machinery used in the context of a BCATS environment. The module also provides skills necessary to produce simple drawing and sketches while planning for a BCATS project.
  • Module 2 – Complete BCATS Projects – In this module, learners will embed the safe working procedures learned in Module 1, develop the ability to effectively use power tools, and learn to interpret plans, follow instructions and contribute to a team in order to complete two BCATS projects including a group project, under general supervision.

  • Completion of New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (Level 1).
  • All applicants will be interviewed to consider their application for the
    enrolment.

Education Pathway

People undertaking this qualification will primarily do so in conjunction with undertaking the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (Level 1) [Ref: 3843]

Employment Pathway

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to obtain entry level roles in building, construction, allied trades’ sectors.
